How To Work Through The Test

Select ONE of the following categories:

  • Most common verbs
  • Common Verbs
  • Less common verbs
  • All verbs
  • Unique verbs (= verbs which don’t behave like any other verb)
  • Irregular verbs (= verbs with a change to the stem in the present tense)
  • Mixed verbs (= verbs which behave partly like strong and partly like weak verbs)

together with ONE of the following:

  • Present form
  • All forms except subjunctive*
  • Preterite form (third person singular, simple past)
  • Past participle
  • ist/hat with past participle
  • Subjunctive*
  • All forms including subjunctive*

In every case, give the third person singular form.

*Subjunctive here = ‘Subjunctive II’ (‘imperfect subjunctive’), e.g. ‘wäre’.

For example, to test the preterite (simple past) forms of very common verbs select:
            ‘Most common verbs’ + ‘Preterite’

You can get another random sample of the same set of verbs, or change the categories, by clicking on ‘New verbs’.

To write your answers, click on one of the blank boxes and type your answer in the grey answer box at the bottom of the page.

Enter special German characters by clicking on the character (next to the answer box). You must click on the space in the answer box after the special character before you continue typing. This is very important. Please note that the test accepts ‘ß’ and not ‘ss’ as per the pre-1998 spelling conventions.

Click on ‘Help’ to see a list of verbs which follow a similar pattern. If you enter a wrong form and click ‘Check answer’ you will also be offered a help list of similar verbs.

Work through the test and when you have finished click the ‘Mark test’ box. The result will be mailed back to your tutor.

You can check any individual answer by clicking on the ‘Check answer’ box.

When you have finished the session click ‘Quit’.
